This is Rock #2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MQqZ_0tyuo

I couldn't do the link like Bud d did. But this is definitely rock. Nofx is one of my favorite bands of all time and definitely my favorite punk band. I had to have one of their earlier videos so I didn't get their political mush mush.

  1. To post videos, you've got to download them to your computer first, and then upload them to the blog. There are free downloaders out there. I found one, UltraGet, that so far seems to work OK. Uploading them to the blog is easy, you just click on the video button on your post and then browse to insert the video you want on your computer. I suppose it's possible to browse the 'net and put in the youtube address. I'll have to try that next time.

  2. I looked at all my other fav bands and most of the videos didn't get the rockin feeling that I think we are looking for in the "This is Rock" topics. I'm not sure if watching Maynard from Tool shake and moan behind a canvas is exactly what we are looking for.

  3. Yeah, I think we should stick to live or semi-live videos. Not artsy studio stuff. Let's see what they're really all about.

  4. Question: how do you guys justify the lyrics of your favorite punk bands to your political beliefs? Do you focus on the instrumentals and treat the lyrics as fun? Or are the lyrics not so much functionally important, but used to invoke emotions similiar to when you both had your punk phases? Like, to bring you back to your youth?

This is Melkor BTWs, using iphone.

  5. Lots of the lyrics are funny no matter if they are liberal or not. NOFX's early stuff mainly sang about fart humor and silly sex stuff. Once they became political their music actually started to suck too. They got out about nine solid albums though before they became political. I usually either laugh at the lyrics while I'm bobbin my head to all liberal punk bands. I don't take it seriously unless I'm in an argument with some portland emo punker. Then I say how stupid NOFX is.

  6. Let me make this point, and don't take it lightly! I would vote for Meghan McCain if she ran for the Republican party nomination. I know, she's only 24, but she is pro-sex, pro-life, and pro-gay marriage, and she is f'n HOT!!!!!
Regarding music, if you are going to continue with This Is Rock, the only performers you could show that would not sing liberal lyrics would be the 10 Fingers of Doom, Ted Nugent, or Toby Keith......enjoy.

  7. At least people can rock while the government is taking over the automobile and banking industry and using coercion to force the health care industry to cut 2 trillion in cost over the next 10 years. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/05/10/health-care-industry-reps-offer-trillion-savings-source-says/
" Insurers, for example, want to avoid creation of a government health plan that would directly compete with them to enroll middle-class workers and their families. Drug makers worry that in the future, new medications might have to pass a cost-benefit test before they can win approval. And hospitals and doctors are concerned the government could dictate what they get paid to care for any patient, not only the elderly and the poor....The president wants to build on the current system, in which employers, government and individuals share the responsibility of paying for coverage. Most Americans would still have private insurance, but the government would play an even bigger role than it does now, by subsidizing premiums for some middle-class families and by setting national consumer protections."

    The parental government. http://townhall.com/columnists/GeorgeWill/2009/05/10/upside-down_economy

Rocking out might reduce stress and health care cost better than the government can.

  8. Melkor poses a good question, and Master Dick's observation cannot be ignored. Most of those who consider themselves artistes are of the liberal bent. Most rockers are of the liberal bent. When you're young, you really don't care about things like that, and anyway, hey we're all f'n rebels against our parents and stuff, so Yeah, Screw The Man! Then you realize that uhm, John Lennon is preaching godless communism, and uhm, NOFX is preaching, uhm, whatever they preach about. I don't know, I can't think of a single song that I like that I severely disagree with, well, maybe Queen's Tie Your Mother Down. Wouldn't want to do that. I suppose I could think of them over time. Sounds like a good idea for a post!

Though the bands I've been in have been filled with mostly all liberals but me, the thing that has kept everything together is to avoid writing overtly political songs. I'm glad they did that. Don't piss off half your potential fans!
