This Actually Happened

Estimated 100,000 dead. This is crazy.

It is easy for us to go on living as if nothing has happened. I don't think there is much wrong with that but it is important to remember how much tragedy has occured. This is an already miserable country and I can't imagine what this might do to their morale. I think it is important that we pray for the victims of this tragedy. Prayer might be the easiest and most important thing we can do.

  1. They need money for doctors, medical supplies and all the above. Prayer will make us feel better about the situation, but we need to donate what we can to get this country help. You just motivated me to go to the American red cross website and see what I can do...

  2. I think that, even though news agencies are reporting on it, people don't know the statistics for sure yet. I think when they start coming back with solid numbers of casualties, it will sink in how huge the disaster is and regardless I think you'll see another enormous (edited out 'huge') American response again.

There's my word again HUGE. Note to self, come up with some differnt words.

  3. I could just say how sad and how sorry I feel for the people, but that has been done already.

Haiti is a poor country that relies on foreign aid to survive. It sucks up capital. I don't know the history of the country very well, but it is poor because of communism, as most African nations are. I saw pics of them living in wooden shacks. Natural disasters have a much more dramatic effect in terms of lost of life in poorer countries; thus less people would have died if the country was not so poor due to its government. Reality bites and people's choice of social habits and what government they have have consequences, in this case more deaths. I don't know how people can continue to have kids when they live is such poverty, it is almost immoral. What the world needs is more Capitalism to increase the standard of living of the world's poor countries.

Looking at the state of Haiti makes one thankful that they live in America. Haiti is portent of where the current policies being carried out in America are taking this Nation. The very things, Capitalism and the free market, that make it possible for America to help out countries in times of disaster are trying to be transformed by our current government.

It is interesting that the world calls America evil, a belief our President holds, but when disasters strike they come begging the U.S. to help them out. And America always does. I wonder if the other communist countries down there will be helping out Haiti? Cuba? Venezuela?

Before I am called evil, I donate money every other month to the Red Cross, to include international, and I would be willingly to go down there and help the people out. http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/impact/

  4. "Charitable Americans eager to help the nation of Haiti recover from Tuesday's devastating earthquake are being warned to be on the lookout for online scammers."

"A number of "text to donate" services have been set up for people to make donations directly from their cell phones. But consumer advocates are warning that, as more are created, some may be phonies."

    "Two that are trustworthy are:

"-- Texting HAITI to 90999: The U.S. Department of State's Web site suggests texting "HAITI" to "90999" to donate $10 to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts. The $10 will be charged to your cell phone bill. Or you can go online to organizations like the Red Cross and Mercy Corps to contribute to the disaster relief efforts."

"-- Texting YELE to 501501: On Twitter, musician Wyclef Jean, a native of Haiti, notes, "Haiti needs your help text YELE to 501501 and 5 dollars will go toward earthquake relief." Yele Haiti is a grassroots movement Jean has set up to inspire change in Haiti through programs in education, sports, the arts and environment."

"According to the Internet Storm Center, both of these "text to" options are legitimate services: "Both short codes in use right now, 501501 and 90999, are tracing back to registered twitter accounts and I consider them authentic at this point," says the Center's Johannes B. Ullrich. But other text-to-donate services may arise, and not all of them will be trustworthy."

  5. How nasty do you have to be to steal money from people in the name of a crisis like this?

  6. I heard that limbaugh is attacking obama because he thinks Obama is taking advantage of this crisis.

I think Limbaugh should shut his mouth for now. I dont know exactly what he said, but now is not the time. He should wait until the suffering is over to make those kind of accusations. I'm sure Obama will try to politically help himself with this but who wouldnt? As long as your intentions are good, there is nothing wrong with getting a few votes.
