Oregon - Where the Socialist Dream Lives On

As the Republican wave swept over the country, liberal enclaves on the West Coast and the Northeast held onto the Obama dream, at least a little while longer.  No place more so than Oregon, where the makeup of the House & Senate members remained unchanged (4 Democrats/1 Republican in the House, 2 Democrat Senators), and where an ex-two term liberal governor was elected to the post again.  Oregon hasn't had a Republican governor since the '80's.

In January 2010, while the country was slipping into a deep recession and Tea Party mania was sweeping the land, Oregon stood strong and voted in favor of Measure 67, which according to Ballot Pedia:
increase(d) taxes in the state by $733 million through increasing the state’s corporate minimum tax, raising taxes on the state’s high-income individuals and raising income taxes on businesses.
I don't recall the ballot measure, but I know that in 2009, as the state unemployment rate was skyrocketing, my own Multnomah County voted on a property tax hike to make sure the teachers got their 3% pay raise, even while everyone else was headed to the unemployment lines. Such is the perspective of most Oregonians that anything and everything must be done to keep the State government unions fully funded and in power.

Oregon's success in implimenting its socialist policies is reflected in its unemployment rate, which is a full 3% higher than the already way-too-high national average.

Now the Wall Street Journal has come out with an article showing how the taxation of the rich has led to a loss of tax income for the state, a result that will surprise no RTP&GGer (the link is to the TaxProf blog as you need a subscription to see the actual WSJ article):
Oregon raised its income tax on the richest 2% of its residents last year to fix its budget hole, but now the state treasury admits it collected nearly one-third less revenue than the bean counters projected. ...

In 2009 the state legislature raised the tax rate to 10.8% on joint-filer income of between $250,000 and $500,000, and to 11% on income above $500,000. Only New York City's rate is higher. Oregon's liberal voters ratified the tax increase on individuals and another on businesses in January of this year, no doubt feeling good about their "shared sacrifice."

Congratulations. Instead of $180 million collected last year from the new tax, the state received $130 million. ...
How could this socialist policy fail? Taxing the rich is the way to prosperity for all, right? As Obama said, "I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody", and "I do think at a certain point you’ve made enough money". Well, that kind of deep, perceptive thought, that could only come from the Ivy League-educated, results in this:
One reason revenues are so low is that about one-quarter of the rich tax filers seem to have gone missing. The state expected 38,000 Oregonians to pay the higher tax, but only 28,000 did. Funny how that always happens. These numbers are in line with a Cascade Policy Institute study, based on interstate migration patterns, predicting that the tax surcharge would lead to 80,000 fewer wealthy tax filers in Oregon over the next decade. ...
Barack and you other socialists, maybe you should make sure you imprison the wealthy so they can't pick up and leave before you rape them of their hard-earned or easily-earned dough.

The sad thing is, the majority of Oregonians embrace these kinds of policies.  Heavy sigh.

What's Going on in Oregon?!

Chris Dudley was a not bad backup center for the Portland Trailblazers from 1994-1997 and in the 2002-2003 season.  He has an NBA record!:
In 1990, Dudley missed 13 consecutive free throws, setting an NBA record
He also was awarded USA Today's 1997 'Most Caring Athlete' award. A good guy. Unlike most NBA players, he actually graduated before going pro, earning Bachelors in Political Science and Economics from Yale in 1987.

He retired from the NBA after the 2002-2003 season and lives in Lake Oswego, OR.  Read the Wikipedia link for more details concerning his life in Oregon after NBA retirement.

So, why should RTP&GG care?  Because earlier this year, he won the Republican nomination to run for Governor of the State of Oregon.  He beat a crowded field of so-so Republicans.  He doesn't have any significant executive or government experience.  My initial reaction was to sigh and say "what a sorry state Republicans are in, in Oregon".  The Democrats nominated popular two-term governor John Kitzhaber, who was governor before our current Democrat (and ex-Marine) Ted Kulongoski.   Kitzhaber was term-limited, but now is eligible to serve again.  Both Democratic governors have done their damnedest to increase the power of public employees unions in their tenures, and have been pretty successful at it.  I figured that, in now heavily Democratic and tax-loving Oregon, newbie Dudley wouldn't have a chance.  He doesn't even have that much name recognition as a Blazer, let alone a politician.

But surprisingly, in all three polls published this year, Dudley has come out ahead of Kitzhaber.  He's not leading by much, but throughout June he has maintained the lead over the well-known and well-liked former governor.  I don't know his politics.  He could be a Scott Brown or he could be a Jim DeMint, but regardless, the fact that a relative no-name can compete effectively in Oregon against a popular Democrat shows how real the Republican tide is this year.

Oregon Beer Tax

I can't believe I haven't posted on this already: A point of particular concern to beer-drinking Robinsons (I believe there are a few): Oregon Legislature Pondering 1900% tax increase on Beer!!!!!!!!

If this weren't a family-oriented and clean-mouthed Robinson blog I'd be foaming at the mouth (and not beer foam) with obscenities! Not only punishing beer drinkers, but punishing one of Oregon's few home-grown entrepreneurial success stories. This tax punishes all Oregon beer drinkers, but in particular, Oregon beer-makers in that it taxes beer by the barrell sold here. As Oregon microbrewers sell virtually all their beer in Oregon, this hits them fully, whereas national brewers only have a small fraction of their sales hit by this tax increase (the fraction that is sold in Oregon). Therefore, the national brewers can diffuse the damage throughout their sales territory and not increase the cost of their beer as high as the Oregon microbrewers do.

And people wonder why Oregon's unemployment rate is higher than the national average: Oregon punishes its own entrepreneurs hardest.

Oregon Unhappiest State

http://www.kgw.com/news-local/stories/kgw_040709_lifestyle_oregon_unhappiest_state.b12148aa.htmlEvidently, according to an online survey, Oregon is the unhappiest state based on fiscal security. Why the hell are we still getting swarms of Californians and Mexicans? Hillsboro is like a big smelly Californian terd. Trust me, I know. The flamin limon cheetos sell best there. What does that tell you?
We may be unhappy based on fiscal security. But if you look around, everyone is still doing alright. Afterall, hippies don't really care about money.
