I haven't seen this movie in its entirety; but from what little I have seen and what wikipedia says about the movie, I disapprove of the movie as it seems to be making fun of Christianity. It was certainly perceived as doing this since it was banned by some countries when it came out in the 1970's.
To me, this is one of the funniest movies ever made. If I were to watch it for the first time today, I would probably be more critical of it and forget to notice the humor.
I agree, that it is probably doing more harm than good to Christianity. However, they never directly attack Jesus and in fact they give him some respect. I think if you have a firm grasp on your faith, this movie can do no harm. It may sway individuals who are faithless wanderers.
There certainly is some gentle ribbing of Christianity in the movie. I remember the protests when it came out, but, though I am a Christian, the protests did not stop me from seeing the movie. There is no direct criticism of Jesus in the movie, in fact, the only time he is shown in the movie, at the Sermon on the Mount, he is shown VERY respectfully (though some of the people listening are not).
It's not a movie for everybody, for sure, but it's hilarious.
I don't think that there is any relationship between the strength of your faith and the acceptance of the disrespect for that faith. If anything that would make you less accepting of this disrespect: the more you love your wife and kids the less accepting you would be of someone disrespecting them.
Christianity is, or at least use to be, the foundation of our free and prosperous society. This movie seems to be undermining this foundation by demeaning Christianity. (The writers according to wikipedia did not like Christianity.) This undermining of the foundations of our society that has led to the internal decay of our culture is at the heart of our nations problems and more specifically the situation our nation finds itself in. I don't that this should applauded. If our nation is to make the necessary course correction, we will have to make some tough internal changes within ourselves by maturing and transforming deeply held/defalut beliefs that have been ingrained in ourselves from our youth.
Great scene. I think my favorite part is when he says:
ReplyDelete"This is a complete waste of time"

Watch the movie and then come talk about it. You'll probably come to the same conclusions though.
ReplyDeleteSince we are on the Monty Python subject, I just want to enlighten everybody with another clip.

Some of the funniest dialogue is when the administrator comes in. I love it.
That little clip has so many sayings in it that we've continued to quote through the years.
ReplyDeleteA little accounting humor from the Administrator.
