Don't Mess With Texas

I thought this was an interesting story.

Basically, this guy named Humberto Leal, a mexican national, raped and murdered a sixteen year old girl in 1995. The evidence was overwhelming against him and it only took the jury 45 minutes to reach a verdict.

The UN and Obama have been trying to postpone the execution, which is scheduled for 6:00 pm thursday 7-7-11. Evidently there is a UN resolution that gives Leal the right to seek consultation from his home nation of Mexico.

My favorite part of the story:

“Texas is not bound by a foreign court’s ruling,” Katherine Cesinger, the press secretary said in a statement (foxnews).

This is just another example, among many, why Texas is awesome.

  1. Texas is awesome. Rick Perry should get some good press standing up to Obama on this. Of course, Obama is playing pure politics on this, trying to impress Latinos with his sympathy for their murdering brethren. I think he was executed.

  2. Texas has created half of the jobs in the nation over the past year, or some other time period. The EPA is trying to stick to Texas with carbon emission regs.

I think he should have been executed, but it did appear that international law was not followed in this case. "“If Texas were to proceed with the scheduled execution of Mr. Leal ... there could be no dispute that that execution would be unlawful -- specifically, in violation of treaty commitments validly made by the United States through constitutionally prescribed processes," Sandra Babcock, a Northwestern University law professor who is one of Leal's attorneys, said last week in her appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court."

If this is so, then an American citizen could not be given his rights by Mexico in a similar situation. This was the rational given by the Obama administration.

I don't know why Mexico or America would not want to see this man executed. And why is Mexico suing the state of Georgia? Mexico has a lot of issues with its drug war. I see America, Mexico and Canada forming a union like the EU down the road.
